National Read A Book Day

Here’s a little history on National Read A Book Day from NationalToday.com:

“National Read a Book Day falls on September 6th, every year! Some people just can’t stop reading, but most of us tend to put reading on the back burner with other “maybe later” activities like hitting the gym or cleaning the oven. Life can definitely get in the way of our reading time, but National Read a Book Day is the perfect opportunity to make some time in your life to read. Whether you’re a sci-fi fanatic, a non-fiction buff, or a not-so-often reader, there is a book out there just for you. This holiday literally reminds us that entertainment isn’t limited to what you can watch on a screen or hear through your speakers. Books can bring whole new worlds to life, not to mention shed light on world events and share perspectives on the human experience in a way that other mediums just can’t. In a world of increasing technology and screen-based communication, National Read a Book Day encourages us to switch off and turn the pages for a while.”

How to Celebrate

Read a book

Obviously, National Read A Book Day wouldn’t be complete without actually reading a book! Some of us read quite often, while some of us find that it can be hard to carve out the time to read. Magazines and newspapers don’t count today – make sure you’re grabbing a book and using your imagination! Who knows – maybe this holiday will help spark a new love of reading to start incorporating into your bedtime routines!

Find a new book

If you’re already an avid reader and feel like you don’t need to do anything extra to celebrate this holiday, think again! There are so many great books out there, so why not look for a brand new one to read for yourself, or even for your kids? We sometimes tend to stick to the “oldies but goodies” – everyone has a favorite book from their childhood. It might be one of the many classics, such as Dr. Seuss or The Giving Tree. Ours happens to be one of the many that teach us the simplest everyday lessons – Mrs. Spider’s Tea Party – which is a book that helps teach kids to not be so afraid of spiders. We found a great list of books for children of all ages from Scholastic that you can find here if you’re looking to find some new favorites!

Pass along a book

Maybe for you, National Read A Book Day means spending time cleaning out your bookshelf to make room for new books! Maybe your child has outgrown some of the books from their younger years, or hasn’t taken to a certain few for whatever reason. Either way, make sure you pass along your old books to a friend or donate them to a local library. You can also find endless lists of organizations to donate your old books to in your area with a quick Google search, some of them even offer free pickup!

Bed Tents

What’s better than curling up with a good book right before bed? Curling up underneath a bed tent, of course! Think of it as the modern version of throwing a blanket over your head while holding a flashlight. Both of our bed tents come in either full size or twin size, and they’re ready to help take your little ones off to dreamland.
