In the age of iPads, YouTube and endless video games, it’s tough to get your kids to want to do some reading. If your little one is a reluctant or frustrated reader, don’t give up! Since January is National Book Month, we have come up with tons of ways to make reading fun for your kids, including an awesome giveaway and an easy DIY you can do at home!
DIY corner bookmarks
A great way to get your kids excited about reading is to give them something to look forward to, like finding their bookmark and putting their bookmark in a new place when the reading session is done. You can take it a step further and make your own bookmarks that they will be excited to transfer from book to book!

More Ways to Make Reading Fun
Sometimes, it can be tough to get a reluctant reader excited about books. Reading can feel like “work” for a lot of children, so in addition to making fun bookmarks, check out some of our favorite tips for making reading fun!
Create a Reading Space
A great way to make kids excited about reading is to create a dedicated reading space in your home. This can be something as simple as a stack of pillows in the corner, to a play tent or tunnel (keep reading to learn more about our favorite!). Make it cozy with a blanket and light, and read out loud to encourage attention and cooperation.
Let Them Choose
One of the reasons your little one might not be too into reading is because they don’t like the books that have been chosen for them. Everyone has a different genre that they like best, so take your kiddo to the bookstore and let them browse. You can also pull up Amazon and have them choose that way if you don’t have a bookstore handy near you. If they are the one who picks out the books to read, they will look forward to it that much more!
Connect Books to Real Life
Making a connection between what your child is reading and their real life can help them get excited about the books they are reading. For example, if you are about to go on a camping trip, then get a book about a camping trip to get them excited. If your little one is starting a new school, you can read a book like A Place For Everyone to get some good values instilled in them. Making the connection will help them draw from lessons learned in the book and apply it to their reality.
The Fun Tube 6FT Tunnel
Our Fun Tube is excellent fun for developing cooperative play! It’s not only great for muscle development by getting kids climbing through, it also stimulates the imagination for creative playtime. You can use this tunnel alone, or connect it to our other Pacific Play Tents. With a total see through design, parents can keep an eye on their little ones while they get fresh ventilation.
Kids love to wiggle and squiggle through these mesh tunnels, and their elbows and knees will be protected by the padded interior. The younger children have the ability to see everything around them while providing hours of fun. The sturdy spring steel construction and fine mesh see-through design will provide enjoyment for kids anywhere from 2 and up. Older kids can use these as “dancing tunnels“, and play tons of different games.
The tunnel collapses down just as quickly as it sets up for easy storage and carrying, and wipes clean with a damp cloth. It’s lightweight and durable design ensures years of playtime, indoors or outdoors!
We also put up some of our Cozy Shades in this classroom to help soften the brightness of the fluorescent lights. These shades fit over standard ceiling fixtures with sturdy, sewn-in magnets, and are made of flame-retardant polyester for safety. They were also perfect in complementing the style of this colorful classroom!
