While you’re working away with your little one on their DIY Valentine’s Day Card, it would be fun to teach them a little bit about the history of Valentine’s Day. Here’s a little bit to go off of, according to National Geographic Kids:

As the story goes, Emperor Claudius II of Rome—who reigned from the year 268 A.D. to 270 A.D.—banned marriage because he thought unmarried men made better soldiers. Valentine thought this was unfair and decided to break the rules and perform marriages anyway. He kept the ceremonies quiet, but he was eventually caught and later killed on February 14 of the year 270 for defying the emperor. Right before he died, Valentine supposedly wrote the first-ever “valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, with whom he’d fallen in love. Later, in the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I declared the day of his death as St. Valentine’s Day.

During the festivities, it’s said that boys drew the names of girls from a container. The pairs would stay together during the festival, and some would actually get married when the festival was over. After Pope Gelasius I created St. Valentine’s Day, the festival turned into a Christian celebration that focused on the saint. The Catholic Church doesn’t recognize St. Valentine’s Day on its calendar anymore, but people throughout the world still celebrate the day.

DIY Valentine’s Day Card

This DIY Valentine’s Day card isn’t just your regular folded-over piece of paper. It’s super creative, which is why your partner and their little sweethearts will love it and all of the efforts put into it — they will never know you put it together last minute!

This DIY Valentine’s Day Card will definitely require some adult assistance thanks to the use of an X-acto knife, and will especially require some assembly help if your little one is still very little.

What You Need

  • Valentine’s Day Card Printable
  • Card stock paper
  • Scissors
  • X-acto knife
  • Double-sided tape
  • Regular tape
  • Marker
    • TIP: We used silver so that it would show up better
  • Thread

How You Make It

  1. Print out the printable on a thick card stock
  2. Cut out the card and the moons
    1. TIP: We used a ruler to cut the card out so it would have straight lines
  3. Score and fold the card in half
    1. TIP: A ruler and blunt edge will help you score the paper so that it is easier to fold at the grey line in the middle.
  4. While the card is still folded, cut out the circle on the card using the X-acto knife
    1. TIP: We did a combo of the x-acto and scissors. There is no circle on the back, so it’s important to make sure to do the cuts while it is folded.
  5. Once you finish cutting the circle out, it’s time to start making the moon! Make sure that both of the moons are aligned so that the heart is right-side up.
  6. Cut your thread (make sure you have more than enough)
  7. Using the double-sided tape, tape the thread and the moons so you have something like what’s pictured in our images.
  8. Align your moon spinner to the center of the circle you cut out on the card and tape down the thread.
    1. TIP: Make sure the moon is right side up, so that you clearly see the heart when looking at the card. You might want to use regular, stronger tape depending on the thinness of the thread being used.
  9. Once the moon is aligned and secure, using double-sided tape, seal the edges of the card from the “inside”, while also putting some extra strips in the blank spaces.
  10. Write the name of your sweetheart and your Valentine card is ready to take flight!
