Summer may be coming to a close but practicing sun safety is a must for all seasons! In fact, skin protection is just as important (if not more so!) as the days get shorter and more overcast because UV rays still penetrate through the clouds and reflect off of bright surfaces such as snow. Needless to say, taking extra precautions before your little one plays outside is a must but it doesn’t have to be a huge production. Read on to find our three top sun safety tips!
One of the easiest ways to protect sensitive skin from the elements is to use our Presto Cabana Tent anytime your children will be spending the day outside. Whether they’re digging in the sand at the beach or simply hanging out in the backyard, this tent is perfect for all kinds of outdoor experiences. Not only does this UV-treated tent pop open in a matter of seconds but it’s large enough to accommodate both children and adults alike, thus allowing the whole family to take refuge from the sun! Win-win.
Secondly, we are big believers in lathering on the sunscreen several times a day! It’s so important to reapply after a few hours of outdoor time to ensure that precious baby skin stays protected all day long. While you’re at it, be sure to dress your children in light, breathable fabrics that will keep them cool from sun up to sun down.
Finally, there’s nothing quite like a hat to provide shade to small faces and necks! Hats are such an easy way to keep the sun out of little ones’ faces, however, convincing them to keep their hat on can be quite a challenge. Luckily, we’ve found a simple solution to ensuring that hats stay in place: DIY straps made out of yarn! Here’s what you’ll need:
SUPPLIES
- Straw hat
- Yarn
- Washi tape (or other temporary tape)
- Scissors
- Hot glue
- Large wooden bead
Begin by cutting two 4′ strands of yarn. Fold each strand in half and then in half again. This will create six separate strings to use for the braid. Once the yarn is evenly folded, find the middle and tape the top to a flat surface using washi tape (as shown above). Trim off the bottom of the strands to even them out. Next, begin braiding the yarn in two strand increments until you have created two long braids.
Take each strand and adhere it to the underside of both sides of the hat with hot glue.
Once both straps are glued in, thread a large wooden bead through the bottom of the strands and use to adjust the hat properly to each child’s head.
Three cheers for sun safety!
