There is something so exciting as a child when you’re attending a birthday party. Fun is 100% certain to be in store, not to mention all the delicious food and cake. For parents, it can be a bit of a challenge to come up with new and fun things for kids to do, especially in the fall. We are here to remind you that there is absolutely nothing wrong with going back to basics! Some of the most fun games can be the classic ones, which is why we wanted to pay homage to simpler times with a super-easy birthday party DIY and chair games!

It folds up compactly into its carry bag with an attached shoulder strap for easy transporting, so take them to the park or anywhere the birthday party might be. Take it easy, tiny tots!
DIY Party Hats
What’s a birthday party without some party hats? A great way to break the ice with your party crew is to set up a DIY Party Hats station! It’s easy and quick so they can get to playtime ASAP.
What You Need
- This printable
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Elastic bands
- Small hole puncher
- Tape (optional)
How You Make Them
- Make sure you have plenty of copies of the printable and pass one out to each child. Have extras on hand in case someone “messes up” or changes their mind!
- Have the kids color in the hat
- Optional: Throw on whatever extras you want to the hat! Use some tape or glue to put on glitter, pom poms or anything else you could possibly think of. Just remember to allow for time to dry before putting them on.
- Cut out the printable with the scissors
- Fold the flaps of the part that will be going into the slit to make the hat. This will make it easier to insert it into the slit.
- Optional: You can use tape here to give it some better reinforcement!
- Punch holes, one on each side
- Thread the elastic band through the holes
- Knot the band on the inside and get ready to have the best party ever!
Games to Play
As we mentioned, we are taking it back to the basics and having fun with some classic birthday party games with this blog. We rounded up a few of our favorite group chair games from JugglingWorld, below. All you need are your birthday hats, some chairs and a group of excited party animals for these games! How easy is that?
Musical Chairs
What would be a blog about birthday chair games without mentioning musical chairs? Children love the all-out intensity and competitiveness of this game. If you need a refresher, here’s how you play:
- Set out chairs in a circle, using one less chair than there are children. For example, if 10 children are playing, put out 9 chairs.
- Play some music – we’ve got our favorite musical chairs playlist below!
- Have the children walk in a circle around the chairs as the music plays, making sure they’re not going too slow!
- Stop the music at any time. When the music stops, each child has to sit on a chair
- Whoever is left standing without a chair is “out”, another chair is removed, and the game repeats
- Whoever gets to sit in the last chair at the end, wins!
Find the Leader
- The children sit in a circle except one who is the “detective”.
- The detective leaves the room while another child is chosen as the “leader”.
- The detective then has 3 tries to find the leader.
- The leader starts making a rhythm/action which all the group copy, then the leader changes his actions e.g. clapping, waving, hitting chest.
- The other children have to copy the leader without making it too obvious.
- Keep playing until there is only one winner left!
Zoom, Zap, Screech
- The birthday boy or girl starts by sending a Zoom to the player sitting beside them.
- They do this by moving their hands towards the next person and saying “Zoom”!
- The Zoom can go all the way around the circle, but if someone wants to stop the Zoom going in that direction and send it the other way, then they cross their arms over their body and say “Zap”.
- The other command for this game is if you want to send a Zoom to a certain person, then you point at them with both hands, and say Screech to ____ (person’s name).
- People can be put out of this game for slow responses, or using the wrong command.
