Christmas is less than a week away! Now that the kids are out of school and are hanging out more at home, it’s time to give them a little something to do. Decorating for the holidays is always fun, but we tend to put up expensive, beautiful decorations that – let’s be honest – the kids aren’t allowed to touch. Let them be part of the decorating this year, all while keeping them busy with our awesome ornament DIY!
Making Christmas ornaments for the tree is an awesome tradition to have; you can look back on years past when unboxing them, and the kids feel like a major part in the decorating process. There’s tons of different kits and things you can grab to make ornaments, but what is more special than one that is completely custom and homemade? Keep reading and let’s get to crafting!
DIY Christmas Ornament
These adorable ornaments don’t just have to be for the tree – you can hang them around the house, fireplace or make a mobile! Whatever you decide to use them for, they are an awesome memory to look back on for Christmases to come. We want to give you full disclosure: Making these ornaments are a little time consuming, but we’ve added some pro tips into the steps to help you move it along quicker if you are making more than one.
What you need
Several pieces of different colored felt – get creative!
Scissors
Needle & thread
Glue gun
Ornament hook
Something to top the tree with – pom pom, scraps, a bell or anything you’d like!
How you make it
- Cut out a circle that you want to be your largest size for the bottom piece.
- Take a needle and thread and stick the needle through the center of the felt piece, and pull all the way through. Make sure there is a knot at the end of your thread, so that the string stops at the bottom when pulled all the way through.
- Repeat with several different pieces of felt of various sizes, getting smaller in diameter as you go.
- PRO TIP: If you wanted to make more than one ornament, make sure you make the same size circle with a couple of felt layers on top of each other. This will help your process move along quicker – instead of making seemingly 5 million circles one at a time, you are making 5 million circles 3 at a time or two at a time!
- Once your tree is built out to the size you want, feel free to embellish it a bit. You can cut out a star from scraps of felt and glue it to the top, or you could also use a bell, large pom pom or some other accessory of your choice for the top of your tree. Make it yours!
- Once you are done making it pretty, add a trunk to the bottom of your tree. To do this, take a rectangular scrap of brown felt, roll it up and glue to the bottom of your tree.
- Next, add the hook! Loop it through the top, and hang it on your tree.
Make it extra special
Now that you have your DIY Christmas tree ornament, let’s take it up a notch and make it even more unique! We put together a few ideas to make these ornaments extra fun and special.
- Use glitter glue or a Sharpie to add the year to the bottom piece. Never forget this awesome memory! Add the year to the bottom piece, so you and your little one will always be able to look back and remember the good time you had making it. Whenever you’re decorating the Christmas tree in the years to come, you will smile!
- Write a memory from the year on each piece of felt before assembling. Did you go on a family vacation this summer? Did they start going to a new school? Did they accomplish a new goal like riding a bike, finish potty training or play on a sports team for the first time? Write all these on each of the the pieces of felt before assembling, so that you can look back and remember what specifically happened this year!
- Give them to family as a special gift. Kids generally have no idea what to give people for Christmas, especially to members of the family that they don’t see too often. Instead of lending them $20 to pick something out at the mall, have them make these ornaments to give to family members. Write their name at the bottom as well, so that each member of your family will have a special, handcrafted present made with love!
