Spring is here, which means you finally get to spend more time outside! Being stuck inside all winter keeps you on your toes as far as coming up with ways to entertain the kids, but luckily, the days of running amuck outside are here.

DIY: Giant Memory Cards

This is fun twist on the regular sized classic game! When you’re out at long sporting events, hanging in the backyard or camping, it can be tough to find ways to pass the time. One of the easiest, age-old ways of passing time is by playing cards! This card game is easy to make and even easier to play, so kids and adults of all ages can enjoy it together.

What You Need

How You Make Them

  1. Print out the printable onto the cardstock
  2. Cut out the cards along the trim marks, using the ruler for precision and the utility knife for faster cutting.
    1. TIP: If you don’t have card stock, you can cut out the cards by using regular scissors. Then, you can glue the cards onto construction paper or cardboard pieces for extra durability.
  3. Now you’re ready to play!

How to Play

  1. Lay the cards out face-down.
  2. One person gets to flip one card over, then a second card.
  3. If the second card is a match to the first one, they get to keep those cards and play again.
  4. If the second card wasn’t a match, they have to turn those cards over and it’s the next person’s turn.
  5. The player with the most cards after the deck is drawn is the winner!

More Card Games

The matching game is super fun, but if you’re looking to play other games with your new card set we’ve got you covered! While the possibilities are endless, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite ways to play with your DIY Memory Cards. Every game is super easy and can be played anywhere on the go!

Spelling Flashcards

These cards are a great way to brush up on spelling, while making it fun! On the back of all the cards, write what it is. For example, you can write hat, logo, beach, bike, sunscreen and picnic on the respective cards. Show your little one the image side, and see how well they can spell it.

Concentration

Show the flashcard to the child for 30 seconds, then turn it toward yourself. See how many details they can remember within a given period of time! Some examples can be the SPF on the lotion bottle, what the people are eating on the picnic, what color the bikes and helmets are or the little details of the girls on the beach. This game is great for teams to work on separately and write their answers down, then compare and see who has the most correct answers when the time is up.

Charades

A child draws a card and has to act out what is happening on the card. Whoever guesses correctly first wins, and gets to draw and act out a card of their own. Extra points for creative ways to act out the logo card, and extra points for not having a second set of cards to guess from. Great to play with teams, as well!

Around The World

We found this one on the Crafty Classroom. To play this, have everyone stand together in a circle. Then, choose a pair of students next to each other as the first set. Hold up a flashcard and the student who says the name first moves on to compete against the next person. The goal is to get all the way around the circle and back to the student’s original spot.

Slap

You’ll need at least two players for this one. Lay down all the cards face-up. Call out a specific word, shape or object. The first child to slap the correct card gets a point! The child can then remove the card and keep it, and whoever has the most cards at the end wins. This also makes it tougher to come up with ways to get the kids to guess, but makes it much more intense when there is only one or two cards left!
